Day 4 – Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread

Scripture Reading (NKJV)
“Give us this day our daily bread.”
Matthew 6:11
There is something beautifully simple about these words.
Jesus does not teach us to pray,
“Give me enough for the next five years.”
He teaches us to pray,
“Give us this day our daily bread.”
Once again, Jesus brings us back to today.
If I am honest, I don’t always live there.
Far too often my mind races ahead to tomorrow.
I worry about next week…
Next month…
Next year.
I find myself trying to solve problems that haven’t even happened yet.
Please don’t misunderstand me.
There is nothing wrong with having dreams, goals, or making wise plans for the future. God often gives us dreams to pursue and calls us to be faithful stewards of what He has entrusted to us.
But there is a difference between planning wisely and living anxiously.
When my thoughts become consumed with tomorrow, I often miss the blessings God has already prepared for today.
Jesus lovingly calls me back.
Back to today.
Back to trusting my Father.
Back to depending on Him one day at a time.
When Jesus teaches us to pray for our daily bread, He is not only speaking about physical food.
He is reminding us that every good gift comes from our Father.
Today’s strength.
Today’s wisdom.
Today’s peace.
Today’s grace.
Today’s courage.
Today’s joy.
Everything I need to faithfully walk with Him today.
As I sat quietly reflecting on these words, another thought settled deeply into my heart.
Perhaps Jesus is teaching us something more than simply asking for today’s provision.
Perhaps He is also teaching us to let go of yesterday.
You cannot receive today’s bread if you are still holding on to yesterday’s scraps.
That sentence stopped me.
How often do I carry yesterday into today?
Yesterday’s mistakes.
Yesterday’s disappointments.
Yesterday’s fears.
Yesterday’s guilt.
Yesterday’s regrets.
Even yesterday’s successes.
I carry them into a brand-new day, forgetting that my Father has already prepared fresh grace for me this morning.
Then I remembered the Israelites in the wilderness.
Every morning God faithfully provided fresh manna.
Enough for that day.
If they tried to keep yesterday’s manna because they feared tomorrow, it spoiled. God wasn’t being harsh; He was teaching His people to trust Him daily.
Every sunrise was another invitation to believe that He would provide again.
Perhaps He is teaching me the same lesson.
Not to live on yesterday’s experiences.
Not to cling to yesterday’s hurts.
Not to fear tomorrow.
But to receive today’s bread with open hands.
Scripture reminds us:
“Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed,
Because His compassions fail not.
They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness.”
Lamentations 3:22–23 (NKJV)
I love that God’s mercies are new every morning.
Not because He forgets yesterday.
But because He lovingly reminds me that I do not have to live there anymore.
Every new day is a fresh invitation to trust Him again.
Jesus reminds us of this in Matthew 6 when He points to the birds of the air.
They neither sow nor reap, yet our heavenly Father feeds them.
Then He points to the lilies of the field.
They do not toil or spin, yet God clothes them with incredible beauty.
If God so faithfully cares for birds and flowers…
How much more will He care for His children?
Those words have become such a comfort to me.
Because I know how easily I worry.
I know how often I try to carry tomorrow before God asks me to.
Yet Jesus gently reminds me that worrying has never changed the future.
It has only stolen the peace He wanted me to experience today.
Perhaps that is why Jesus teaches us to pray for daily bread.
Not because tomorrow doesn’t matter.
But because today’s dependence builds tomorrow’s faith.
Today’s bread may not always look like financial provision.
Sometimes today’s bread is courage.
Sometimes it is wisdom.
Sometimes it is peace.
Sometimes it is forgiveness.
Sometimes it is the strength to take just one more faithful step.
And sometimes…
Today’s bread is simply the presence of Jesus walking beside me.
So today…
I choose to release yesterday.
I choose to place tomorrow into God’s hands.
And I choose to receive today’s bread with open hands and a grateful heart.
Because my Father already knows exactly what I need before I even ask.
His provision is never late.
His mercy is never exhausted.
His grace is always enough.
Today…
I will not live on yesterday’s scraps.
I will receive today’s bread.
One day.
One prayer.
One whisper at a time.
Reflection
- What “scraps of yesterday” am I still carrying today?
- Have I become so focused on tomorrow that I’ve missed God’s blessings for today?
- What has God already provided for me today that I may have overlooked?
- What would it look like for me to trust my Father with just this one day?
Prayer
Father,
Thank You for being the God who faithfully provides everything I need for today.
Forgive me for the times I have carried yesterday’s burdens or worried about tomorrow instead of trusting You in this moment.
Teach me to open my hands and receive the fresh mercy, grace, wisdom, and strength You have prepared for me today.
Help me to let go of every regret, every fear, and every burden that keeps me from experiencing the peace You desire for me.
Thank You that Your mercies are new every morning and that Your faithfulness never fails.
Like the birds of the air and the lilies of the field, help me to rest in the confidence that You know my every need and that You will faithfully care for me.
Today, I choose to trust You.
Today, I choose to receive my daily bread.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
