Day 3 – Your Will Be Done

Scripture Reading (NKJV)
“Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.”
— Matthew 6:10b
Yesterday we prayed, “Your Kingdom come.”
Today Jesus invites us even deeper.
“Your will be done.”
If I am honest, this is one of the hardest prayers I can pray.
Perhaps because I have spent so much of my life trying to tell God how His will should unfold.
My prayers have often sounded something like this:
“Lord, this is what I believe You want for my life… and if You could make it happen this way, I would really appreciate it.”
Looking back, I have to smile.
As if my plans have always worked so well before.
There have been moments in my life when I have looked at the choices I made and thought,
“Lord, I have made such a mess of things.”
Yet even there, my Father has never abandoned me.
He gently reminds me that His grace is greater than my failures and that He is still able to redeem what I have placed in His hands.
That is why praying,
“Your will be done,”
requires something far deeper than obedience.
It requires trust.
Trust that His wisdom is greater than mine.
Trust that His timing is better than mine.
Trust that even when I cannot understand His ways, He is working for my good and for His glory.
Sometimes I think I understand what God’s will should look like.
I have my own ideas.
My own plans.
My own timeline.
But following Jesus means loosening my grip on those expectations.
It means laying them at His feet and saying,
“Father, not my way, but Yours.”
That is not always easy.
Jesus purchased our freedom through His death and resurrection.
Because of Him, I no longer have to remain a slave to sin.
But freedom in Christ also calls me to something.
To submit.
To change.
To walk away from attitudes, habits, and even relationships that pull me away from God’s heart and His purposes for my life.
Scripture calls us to become more like Christ.
Not that we become Christ, but that His character is formed within us.
That transformation is beautiful.
But it also costs us something.
It costs our pride.
Our selfish ambitions.
Our desire to remain in control.
As I reflected on these words, one picture came to mind.
Praying “Your will be done” feels a little like freefall.
You step forward without knowing exactly where you will land.
You cannot see the whole journey.
You simply trust that the Father who called you is also the Father who will catch you.
He knows exactly where He is leading you.
And wherever He leads, His purpose is always to glorify Himself and to shape us into the image of His Son.
The apostle Paul writes:
“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me…”
— Galatians 2:20 (NKJV)
Every time I pray,
“Your will be done,”
I am praying those words again.
Lord…
Less of me.
More of You.
Your desires instead of mine.
Your plans instead of mine.
Your purpose instead of mine.
Sometimes His will asks us to let go.
To release dreams we thought were ours.
To forgive people who have deeply hurt us.
To walk away from things that draw us away from Him.
To trust Him with unanswered questions.
None of those things are easy.
But every one of them draws us closer to the heart of our Father.
As I thought about surrender, I was reminded of the writer of the beloved hymn,
“It Is Well with My Soul.”
Those words were written after unimaginable loss.
Yet in the middle of deep sorrow, he was still able to declare,
“It is well with my soul.”
That statement was not based on his circumstances.
It was rooted in his trust in God.
Perhaps that is what Jesus is inviting us into.
When I pray,
“Your will be done,”
I am asking God to align my heart with His.
To shape my desires until they reflect His desires.
To bring my thoughts into submission to His truth.
To teach me that His plans are always wiser than my own.
His will may not always be the easiest path.
It may not look the way I expected.
But I know this with all my heart:
His way is always better than mine.
Today, I choose to trust the Father who sees what I cannot see.
The Father who knows the end from the beginning.
The Father whose plans are always rooted in perfect love.
So today, once again…
I give Him my yes.
Reflection
- Is there something I have been trying to control instead of surrendering to God?
- Have I been asking God to bless my plans instead of seeking His?
- What might God be asking me to let go of today?
- Can I honestly pray, “Your will be done,” even when I do not understand?
Prayer
Father,
Today I lay down my own plans, my own understanding, and my own desire to control the outcome.
Teach me to trust Your heart when I cannot see Your hand.
Help me to surrender what does not honor You and to walk away from anything that keeps me from Your purposes.
Shape me into the likeness of Christ.
When the path feels uncertain, remind me that You are faithful.
When surrender feels costly, remind me that Your grace is sufficient.
Align my heart with Yours until I can honestly pray—not only with my lips but with my life—
Your will be done.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
