When Gratitude Isn’t Easy

It has been a while since I last posted. Procrastination got the better of me—more than I would like to admit. For that, I need to apologise to you who have been ready to read, and to myself, because this is not how I wanted to begin my blogging journey.
But here I am.
And what a journey it has already been.
“Recently, my family experienced a frightening situation that reminded us just how quickly life can change. While the outcome could have been far worse, it left me reflecting on God’s protection, faithfulness, and the importance of gratitude.”
In the days that followed, I found myself thinking about many things. Fear. Relief. Worry. Faith.
And one word kept coming back to me:
Gratitude.
Not the easy kind of gratitude that comes when everything is going well, but the kind that is tested when life takes an unexpected turn.
What does it really mean to be grateful when your heart has been shaken?
Most of us find it easy to be thankful for the blessings we prayed for. A new job. Restored health. Financial provision. Good news from a doctor. Those moments naturally lead us to say, “Thank You, Lord.”
But what about the moments when life doesn’t go according to plan?
What about the moments when gratitude feels difficult?
The Bible says in James 1:2–3:
“Consider it great joy, my brothers, whenever you experience various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.”
Joy in trials?
If I’m honest, that isn’t always my first response.
And yet Scripture reminds us again in 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18:
“Rejoice always! Pray constantly. Give thanks in everything, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
Give thanks in everything.
Not for everything—but in everything.
That small difference has encouraged me greatly.
I’ve begun to notice that when I choose gratitude instead of frustration, something shifts inside me. The circumstances may not change immediately, but my perspective does.
My heart softens.
My focus changes.
I become more aware of God’s presence and faithfulness, even in the middle of uncertainty.
Perhaps gratitude isn’t always about changing our circumstances.
Perhaps it is one of the ways God changes us.
Maybe you are reading this while facing something much heavier than traffic delays, inconvenience, or disappointment. Maybe you are carrying worries that no one else can see.
I don’t pretend to understand your situation.
But I do know this:
God is still worthy of our trust.
God is still present.
And God is still working, even when we cannot see the full picture.
So today, I want to leave you with a simple challenge.
Find one thing to thank God for.
It may be something small.
It may be the very breath in your lungs.
It may be the loved ones around you.
It may simply be the knowledge that God has carried you this far.
Start there.
Because sometimes gratitude begins with a single “thank You.”
And from there, God begins to change our hearts.
Reflection Question
What is one thing you can thank God for today, even if your circumstances are difficult?
Prayer
Father, thank You for Your faithfulness in every season. Help us to trust You when life is uncertain and to choose gratitude even when it is difficult. Open our eyes to see Your hand at work in our lives and remind us daily of Your goodness. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
